Portable Modular Railroads

A Method for Building a Portable, Lightweight, and Economical Model Railroad Layouts.

If you’re looking to make your model railroad portable, for any reason, this is for you. My name is Dave, and I’ve spent several years refining a modular system that makes model railroads portable, lightweight, and economical. My system consists of three layers:

  1. Baseboard Modules: Lightweight wooden modules that serve as the foundation and can be bolted together.
  2. Sub-Roadbed: Layers of pink extruded polystyrene that provide elevations, such as tunnels or mountainous terrain.
  3. Scenery Layer: White expanded polystyrene, which can be detailed to your preferences.

I build on a baseboard size of 100×200 centimeters (approximately 3’2″ by 6’5″). While I personally prefer N-scale, you can adapt these modules to any size or scale. For example, I use 50×50 centimeter modules, which fit perfectly into standard packing boxes. My entire model railroad fits into three packing boxes, with room to spare. Check out my YouTube videos to see how I build portable modular railroads.

Each module stands alone, complete with scenery, trackwork, benchwork, and wiring. This system allows you to create a fully functional layout of any size, which can later be stored or transported easily. It also enables you to work on one module at a time in a small space. This method is ideal for young beginners (recommended for ages 9 and up) and anyone with limited space or resources.

Each module stands alone with completed scenery, trackwork, benchwork, and wiring.
You can build a continuous fully working model train layout in whatever size you desire and later enables you to store the modules or transport them anywhere. It also allows you to work on one module at a time in a small space. The portable modular railroad layout system is great for young children to get started in model railroad building – recommended ages 9 and up.

Examples and Benefits of a Portable Modular Railroad:

  • Space-Saving: Perfect for homes with limited space, where permanent benchwork isn’t feasible.
  • Cost-Effective: Start small with a few modules and expand gradually as your budget allows.
  • Flexible for Life Changes:
  • If you’re too busy to work on your layout, you can store it.
  • When finances are tight, you can pause and resume when ready.
  • It’s easy to move or transport your layout during life transitions or relocations.
  • Family-Friendly: Accommodates family members who may not be fans of model trains, allowing you to store the layout when needed.
  • Convenient Detailing: Work on one module at a time for fine detailing while keeping the others stored away.
  • Great for Exhibitions: Transport your layout to model railroad shows to share your hobby with the public.
  • Portable for Travel: Take a single module in your luggage on business trips to continue your hobby on the road.
  • Showcase Your Talent: Bring a module to a friend’s house or a party to share your work.
  • Reusable and Transferable: When you’re ready for a new layout, donate, sell, or ship your existing portable modules with ease.
  • Future-Proof: Build a layout that can be reassembled by others after your passing, ensuring your work lives on.

Why build Portable Modular Railroads?

  • Any Scale: Although I prefer N-scale, this system works for any scale, including HO, which first introduced me to this amazing hobby.
  • Customizable: Connect as many or as few modules as you want to create the layout of your dreams.
  • Flexible and Adaptable: Portable modular railroads are simply more versatile than traditional layouts.

This method of building a model railroad layout combines portability, flexibility, and affordability, making it ideal for hobbyists at any level. Happy railroading!
