About Portable Modular Railroads

The set I started with was from Hobby Lobby, and the box also included some items I purchased in a lot on eBay. As I delved deeper into the hobby, I discovered that the world of N gauge model trains had gone digital! This revelation led me to purchase a DCC set, which you can see here.

My journey with model railroading began when my father built me a 4×8 sheet of plywood layout for my 10th Christmas. It featured a loop of HO scale track and a red Santa Fe EMD F9 locomotive. Over the years, I expanded it, adding a Union Pacific GP-35 loco and a yellow and blue Santa Fe switcher.

Nowadays, space is limited, and I cannot install permanent benchwork in our small home. Additionally, my work often requires me to take on large projects, meaning I may need to store my layout for extended periods. However, my love for the hobby inspired me to create a modular system of my own.

Although kits are available, I decided to use some leftover plywood that wasn’t utilized for its original purpose. I cut it into 50×50 cm sheets and added a base. It was a simple and effective solution!
